Special Olympics Northern California's spring bocce practice schedule for Monterey County begins Sunday, March 24 and runs weekly through Sunday, May 12. Practices take place at the Custom House Plaza (next to Fisherman's Wharf) in Monterey under the direction of coach James Nicole. The spring schedule can be found on the www.sonc.org website, or by clicking here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Hv5GLsJAb71wH20q77CrlcvtNgCmSbX8M-3r4lfLkao/edit#gid=1473398089.
Special Olympics is open to every person with an intellectual disability, regardless of the level or degree of that person’s disability and whether or not that person also has other mental or physical disabilities. Athletes must be at least 8 years old to compete at a sports competition. Athletes between 6–7 years of age can come out for practices, but cannot compete. There is no “cap” on how old an athlete can be. We have some very active athletes who are in their 50s and 60s and some are still going strong in their 70s!
Basketball was first contested at the 1968 Special Olympics World Games. By the 1995 World Games, nearly 600 athletes from 40 countries entered the competition. There were 31 men's teams, 18 women's teams, and 10 Unified Sports® teams. Additionally, about 100 athletes competed in individual contest events. These events are for the lower ability athletes and include the target pass, ten meter dribble, and spot shot. Learn more at https://www.sonc.org/programs/community-sports-programs/county/monterey.
